There were over 300,000 people sickened by the tainted milk scam and kids even died in the 2008 Tainted Milk scandal. Unfortunately,, it wasn't even the only one either, so I can completely understand why people are choosing to get items, especially baby formula from other countries. I'd do the same for my kids if I were in the same boat.

    Don’t blame the Chinese.
The Australian government actually encouraged the business as it is a way for the goods to be sold into China.
Australia government actually opened up some vitamin outlets and others in post office to encourage daigou to buy and ship it free of v a t to China.
The government can stop it anytime if it is harmful to the economy.
The business creates jobs in Australia and became a viable distribution channel.
A lot of disgous are students and housewife’s.
It is also dependent on cheap freights.
I think the daigous are inactive now.
Don’t always think that business with China is bad for Australia…..as I say……the Aussie government is NOT stupid.
Without China ….a lot of business in Australia will suffer.
If you are not doing business,….you can afford to be anti China. Damn the torpedoes ! Not my problem …..haha.

it profitable for business, but it's not fair for locals who didnt get their share.
so is that the right thing to do?
idk im not chinese nor australian

Put all the baby food behind glass.

What's wrong with exporting products which was bought from shops and supermarkets? These increased product volume for the companies concerned, taxes already paid to Australian government. The concern of those with daigou is they cannot access the market of the daigou so its plain envy not wrong doing. As to the tax it would be paid in China not Australia as the product is sold in China.

  10. より:

Yes but they are getting away with not having to pay any of the taxes or tariffs which is then benefiting the China not the foreign countries they are operating in especially when these daigou are in these countries without visas that allow them to work breaking the law outright. Sorry but they are basically hurting the people of the country they are in.

i'm so sick of it! i live in nz and my extended family from china. that's like my dad's cousin's kid just had a baby and they kept on hammering me and trying to get me to ship tins and tins of baby formula to them. it's so annoying! i feel ashamed to be chinese sometimes.

  16. より:

Just cut the daigou channel, so milk price can fall under $1 a litter and more people can sleep on the street.

Misguide the world to believe Xi Jin Ping dictatorship communist party is a civilized animal but a barbaric villain. If want to be proud of being a Chinese, must end the dynasty of this 6th grader “forever king”. Simple wrong to force Taiwan to “marry” Chinazi. Unfair to ban the universal suffrage in Hong Kong on 2014 when it was legally granted by the Joint Declaration of United Kingdom and Mainland China on 1984. Nowadays many commie thugs doing internet trolls are paid and dunno English so ignore them 🙂

I came here because the article that linked to this showed the baby formula going to a family who feed it to their 4 year old child, and I need to understand why people are feeding 4 year olds baby formula, let alone paying exorbitant amounts for it. Not only are these people being ripped off, but I think they've been scammed into thinking 4 year olds need formula.

these chinese can buy this stuff online why do they need a diagou where they will charge double…

DOES ANYONE REALISE THAT PRODUCTS ON COLES AND WOOLWORTHS SHELVES ARE RENTED BY COMPANYS? EXAMPLE ;;; A SALES REPRESENTATIVE WILL CONSIDER LOCAL POPULATION AND DEMAND. THEN THEY WILL PAY A LEASE FEE FOR CERTAIN SHELVE ALLOCATION. LOCAL SUPERMARKET SHELVE SPACE CATERS TO THAT PARTICULAR AREA. THESE PEOPLE CREATE PROBLEMS FOR MANUFACTURER, LOGISTICS AND THE LOCAL CONSUMERS. IT GIVES FALSE CALCULATIONS IN THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

ONLY THESE PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM THIS INDUSTRY. THE MANUFACTURER, SUPPLIER, LOGISTICS AND CONSUMERS LOSE FROM THE WAY THEY RAID OUR SHELVES. PARASITES

Smart, successful people are going out and making a living meeting market demand. Good on them. We should have more of it, and be proud that Australian products are in such high demand.
I walk past the baby formula section of my supermarket regularly and have never seen a shortage of powder on the shelves.

  24. より:

The stupid person makes a product. The smart people are the ones who market, resell, and ship that product. They get to make almost all the profit while carrying very little risk. Have a look at wine for example. The producer gets about 15% from the sale of a bottle at the retail level. The rest goes to wholesalers, retailers, and the tax department. If a winemaker has a bad year the marketers, resellers, and shippers of that product can just abandon the product and leave all the losses to the winery.

A billion dollar industry? Some Aussies must be making millions somewhere in Australia from this

  26. より:

China will take full advantage of the good will of the Austrila country. Tax must be implamented as China is very wealthy country. China has proven to be a bully.

  27. より:

What a filthy, populated and corrupt country China is. No wonder they are doing this.

  28. より:

That's it; you people keep buying Chinese because it's cheaper? No regard for the backlash.
Only two types of product are produced in China; fake and crap quality. You buy any food item from China and you die; be smart and read the label before you buy at the supermarket. Now they are sourcing food products from somewhere else because THEY don't want to die.

Mathew Hunt commented; "This I think is a positive, shows the potential demand for Australian products. This is a good thing in the long term." Fair dinkum?
NOT WHEN THEY ARE STRIPPING THE SHELVES LIKE PARASITES AND DEPRIVING AUSTRALIAN BABIES.

  29. より:

Good to know. Most want cheaper and quality plus authentic product.

  30. より:

If I cant import cigarettes, they shouldn't be able to export baby food. This has to stop!

  31. より:

i dont get why these aus companies dont go to china if they products have such demand

  32. より:

There's no point in getting these Daigous to do the right thing – paying tax and all, like any self employed citizens in Australia (register for ABN etc).

When they prepare to send out the items to another country, it is up to Border control and Australia Post (or any other postal services) within the boundaries of Australia, to scan these items and record in a national registry, that once any items are sent continuously, the sender will be sent a tax bill or tax avoidance penalty notice, so they will no way avoid paying any tax at all. All in all, they are making alot of monies from selling Australian products to their countries, right?

For example, Daigou One sent 20 tins of baby milk powder and 50 other individual Australian product, over the course of one month to China, then Australia's Border should record their name, address, and item value being sent on a national register. Their address and total value should able be cross referenced, as each Daigou might use false names or their family members or room mates' names to send out. The Daigous' names and addresses should be cross checked automatically to their TFNs and their Passports.

This is why Daigous are able to afford a life of luxury, because they are making alot of money and no need to work for anyone, no need to study, so they have bad or broken English, and just think the power of money buys everything.

Those people do not pay income tax, ATO should look into it!

  34. より:

Just gst it all at 25% .. their products are rat poison baby formula, they still buy it

  35. より:

All these brainless idiots, saying tax Daigou. Whether they are getting taxed or not, the Australian economy is benefiting from them. People see someone making money, and auto-response is "TAX THEM". The envy and level of stupidity is mind-boggling.

  36. より:

There is no options not to do business with China. Even 5G. Just wait.

  37. より:

So this is why my 'China-Bay' parcels have been taking longer…

  38. より:

double win, someone gets more income and tax, someone gets good products.

  39. より:

Loop holes are to check … that’s how smart people are now a days .. at the expenseS of Australia .. I wonder if other countries are also being hip

  40. より:

When you see empty shelves at the baby formula aisle, the root cause of the situation is neither the shady Chinese shoppers nor the greedy retail corporates. It's that Chinese government set up trade barriers on importing Australian products. It's that Chinese government restrict the free flow of capital. Actually you can buy those products via other channels in China, like supermarket. But the price is tripled as much as in Australia. How come those bulk importing costs more than thousands of small parcels? Tariff, rent seeking (yeah, I mean bribery) and compliance (yeah, Chinese government agencies validate the quality of baby formula. Amazing!)

  41. より:

Question, so does those Daigau individuals sellers have produce an income, why ATO ask them to pay tax?

  42. より:

What’s wrong with ATO? it looks like, ‘Oh, we don’t have a clue to deal with it. Let them trade for tax free.’ ATO can set up register and trace shipment. Come on.
